Salkehatchie Summer Service is a pioneering servant ministry at selected sites in South Carolina involving high school and college age youth, adult community leaders and persons of different cultures in upgrading housing, motivating community cooperative efforts by helping persons to help themselves, and providing all participants with opportunities for personal growth and service. Participants must be at least 14 years old by the beginning of the camp they attend. Adult leaders are also needed to offer guidance and support.
This program of the South Carolina Conference Board of Global Ministries consists of a number of work camps for United Methodist Youth in South Carolina. During the week, participants physically improve homes of needy families and reach out to these families and one another in friendship. There are 48 camps for 2012. The Salkehatchie Steering Committee establishes camps where need, opportunity, personnel and facilities meet. Camps run Saturday to Saturday, May through August.
Many of our neighbors in South Carolina live in homes needing repair and Jesus has called us to love our neighbor (Luke 10:29-37). South Carolina United Methodist Youth need to experience Christian servanthood. “And he said to all, ‘If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’ ” (Luke 9:23)
There is a $215 fee per person. Each volunteer participates fully in the experience of serving, growing, learning and sharing together.
Advent youth and adults will participate in 5 Salkehatchie camps this summer including Rivertown (June 9-16), Sumter (June 16-23), Penn Center (June 16-23), PeeDee (June 30—July7), and Santee (July 14-21). Adults and youth are asked to prayerfully consider serving in Salkehatchie. For registration form, please see the Salkehatchie website at www.salkehatchie.org or stop by the church office for a copy of the registration form.
You are strongly encouraged to send your application and registration fee to Salkehatchie as soon as possibly to ensure you get placed in the camp you select. There are fewer camps this summer so we are anticipating that camps will fill up quickly!
Santa-hatchie 2011
What can 76 site family members comprised of high school students, college students and adults being supported by the loving help of 32 middle school students and their leaders, 32 elementary school children and their leaders and 92+ meal, worship and laundry helpers who offer themselves in loving service of our Lord accomplish in just 48 hours? AMAZING, TRANSFORMATIONAL MINISTRY FOR CHRIST! On December 18-20, over 230 Advent UMC family members (with a friend from Lee Road UMC, Buncombe Street UMC, and Mauldin UMC) joined together to serve in the first ever Santa-hatchie at Advent. Together they helped make the homes of 4 families safer, drier and warmer just before Christmas! This short, intensive mission was blessed through the efforts of so many people, offering themselves in loving service just before Christmas. Many Salkehatchie veterans commented that in the 48 hours the same amount of work was accomplished as during a full week of Salkehatchie! Many site leaders began work in November to help identify the homes and work projects. All materials were purchased and were on site as work began the morning of December 19. And, with the blessing of our Lord, the homes were transformed by the evening of December 20! The greatest gift of Santa-hatchie came from the relationships built with the home owners and their families! TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR THE BLESSINGS OF SANTA-HATCHIE 2011!
