Dining For Women

In 2002 Advent member, Marsha Wallace was at an uncomfortable nexus point in her life. Disenchanted with nursing and, with children growing older/less dependent, she found herself restless and unfulfilled. She felt she had not yet found her higher calling.
One day “the idea hit me like a lightening bolt. I knew I just had to do it.” She had read an article about a group of friends who got together for potluck dinners and made donations to needy families by using the money that they would have otherwise spent in restaurants. Marsha was struck by the idea of creating a giving circle in which members would regularly meet and use dining out dollars to support women and children in developing countries. A Tiny Shoebox Story
Pat and Dave Ahlgren have recently joined our Advent community. In the course of an inquirer’s conversation with Pastor Pete, they told him about how a small shoebox forever changed their lives.
Pat and Dave have been filling shoeboxes for many years. The idea began with Franklin Graham (the son of Reverend Billy Graham), who created Samaritan’s Purse, a charity with many programs. One program, Operation Christmas Child, is devoted to bringing joy and hope to children in desperate situations around the world through gift-filled shoeboxes and the good news of God’s love. Flags and Grommets
As mentioned last Sunday, our Boy Scout Troop 776, sent Capt. Andrew Culbreath, who is an Advent member deployed in Iraq, a set of American flag grommets. The grommets were retrieved after retiring the flag in a camp fire ceremony.
Capt. Culbreath acknowledged the gift and in appreciation sent back a very special item to the troop. [...more]
